Martin Win’s Bronze at Europeans

Grampian Institute of Sport swimmer, Martin Leel (pictured left), was in outstanding form at the Dianasport European Junior Swimming Championships, held at Glasgow’s Tollcross Park Leisure Centre from 31st July to 3rd August.

Martin was the only home-based Scottish swimmer selected for the GB Team following his excellent swims at the British Long-course Championships, held in Sheffield during March, where he set personal best times in both the 100m & 200m Butterfly.

At the European Championships Martin again set personal best times in both the 100m & 200m Butterfly, indicating that both he and club coach Eileen Adams (COAST) got the training preparation ‘just right’. Martin made the 100m final after solidly negotiating his heat and qualifying from a tight semi-final. In the final Martin set a PB of 55.75 to finish in 6th place. In the 200m Martin set a pb in the semi-final to qualify for the final in 8th place by 1/100th of a second. Martin then managed to improve his performance and set a new pb in the final where he finished in 7th place in 2:03.02.

The icing on the cake came on the last day of competition when Martin won a Bronze medal in the 4x100m Medley Relay where Great Britain finished behind winners Hungary and Germany.

Inverness proves a happy hunting ground for City Swim Stars

Just 5 days after returning from their foray to Sheffield, the members of the well travelled COAST  swim team headed to the Highland capital keen to sweep all before them in the North District championships. On this occasion the swimmers represented the six individual city clubs that provide swimmers for the composite COAST team.

This was a younger squad than had been so successful in England the previous week but they proved that COAST has tremendous strength in depth and potential with an overall display of quality and competitiveness that must be the envy of their rivals.

Swimmers who particularly caught the eye were Mark Dunford (18) in the backstroke events and Philip Lloyd (17) in the breaststroke events and also for their consistently outstanding performances over a range of events in the 15/over age group and Robbie Renwick (14) in the 13/14 category who excelled in all the freestyle events, capped by 3 North District record breaking swims in the 100 freestyle (54.12 - a "Challenge" record), 400 Freestyle (4.08.17) and 800 freestyle (8.33.34).

Newly crowned Under 16 Aberdeen Sports personality of the year Adrian O'Neill also starred recording an outstanding 1.59.87 for his 200 Freestyle as well as a whole host of top drawer other times.

In the 12 and under age group top girl award went to Dyce girl Nicola Shand and top boy award went to Cults Otters Paul Boef for a whole series of excellent swims both collecting "Best Age Group Swimmer" trophies.

Head Coach Eileen Adams "Outstanding results from the whole squad - hardly a swimmer who did not PB on 2 or 3 events."

New records April 03

COAST swimmers have posted swims beating over 75 SASA North district records times since August 2002 across all age groups. Many of the short course records have been "challenged" for the ND Championships on 5 / 6 April having stood for over 10 years.

Sheffield 19/22 (British LC) & 27/29 March 03

COAST swimmers were not found wanting in 2 high quality long course competitions against some of the best age group swimmers in Britain.

Top performance from a COAST swimmer was by 16 year old Ranald Falconer who fired a warning shot across the bows of the established older swimmers with a new Scottish Junior Record of 53.43 in the 100m Freestyle. Impressive times in the 50 Freestyle  24.80 and 200 Freestyle 1.58.17 by Falconer completed a successful weekend's work by the Aberdeen teenager.

Hard on the heals in terms of promise came 13 year old fellow Robert Gordon's pupil Adrian O'Neill who continues to get better and better. O'Neill blasted the opposition in the Boys 13 year old age group with 5 stunning gold medal swims throughout the weekend following which he was deservedly awarded best 13 year old male title.

Following his successful performances in the British Long Course championships last weekend at the same venue 17 year old Martin Leel once again turned in top drawer performances in his favourite Butterfly events where he picked up gold on the 50m, 200m and silver in the 100m.

Not to be outdone, another promising youngster from the COAST stable, 14 year old Cults lad Robbie Renwick emerged with a whole clutch of fast times - the best being his 4.13.79 in the 400 Freestyle which gains him a place in the Scottish Youth Squad for next year.

Encouraging performances from many other members of the squad bodes well for the rest of the season.

Head Coach Eileen Adams "Excellent results for the first targeted meet of the season. I am really pleased with the results and we are now starting to prepare for the second phase of the long course season - the ASA competitions in the summer.
