Commonwealth Youth Games

COAST were delighted to be represented by Eileen Adams as Team Manager / Coach and Robbie Renwick for the 3 day competition in Bendigo S. Australia. It was a long way to go for 3 days competition by Robbie returned with 3 medals - a bronze in the 400 FS and bronze in the 14 x 100 FS relay and silver in the  4 x 200 FS. Overall the Scottish swimmers took 30 medals out of 52 for the whole Scottish team. Scottish was 2nd to Australia n swimming medal counts beating South Africa and New Zealand.

North District Open

COAST lifted the North District Team Trophy with some fine individual performances at the weekend. Top performer was 16 year old Performance Squad star Robbie Renwick who won golds in the 100m Freestyle (53.31), 200m Freestyle (1.52.98), 400m Freestyle (3.57.51) (North District Record) and 800m Freestyle (8.30.05). Renwick also took the best male performance awards for his 200 and 400 swims. 
Other Championship winners from COAST were 18 year old Ranald Falconer in the 100m Backstroke (59.12), 19 year old Martin Leel in the 100m Butterfly (58.45) and 18 year old Philip Lloyd in the 200m Breaststroke (2.31.06) (all Performance Squad). 
In the womens events Carrie Simpson (14) took silver in the 100m Butterfly and bronze in the 400m IM and 13 year old Nicola Shand took bronze in the 400m Freestyle and 800m Freestyle (both Performance Squad).

 

ASA Short Course - Manchester 26 - 29 August

COAST, represented by an all male team of 9 Performance Squad swimmers in Manchester for the British Short Course Open Championships, came home with 2 silver medals and a Scottish Junior record.

Olympian David Carry took silver in the Mens 400m Freestyle ahead of Olympic 1500m Bronze medalist David Davies in a time of 3.46.28. British Youth internationalist Martin Leel also struck silver, taking 2nd place in the 50m Butterfly in 24.33. Leel placed 10th in the 100m Butterfly (54.58). 16 year old Robbie Renwick made the final of the 200m Freestyle in 1.50.65 - a new Scottish Junior Short Course record. 17 year old Ranald Falconer made semi finals in the 50m Freestyle (23.63) and the 100m Freestyle (51.03).

 

6 COAST Swimmers selected for the National Youth Squad

COAST is the best represented team of the 31 swimmers picked by National Performance Director Tim Jones for the Scottish National Youth Squad. The COAST swimmers are Ranald Falconer, Robbie Renwick, Michael Adams, Adrian O'Neill, Steven Sutherland and Carrie Simpson. Swimmers faced intense competition and needed to achieve a minimum of 2 qualifying swims. 

 

ASA Championships Sheffield August 04

Four COAST swimmers competed in the ASA National Age Group championships. Adrian O’Neill (14) was top performer coming 6th in the 100m Butterfly (1.00.81) and 8th in the 200 Freestyle (2.03.88) finals. 13 year old Carrie Simpson took 9th spot in the 100 Freestyle (1.01.39) and Nicola Shand, also 13, took 9th in the 200 Butterfly final (2.29.12).

Six male swimmers competed in the Youth (15 – 18 year) competition with Robbie Renwick achieving 3rd in the 200m Freestyle (1.53.96),  2nd in the 400m Free (4.04.01)and 4th in the 1500m Free (16.17.50). 17 year old Ranald Falconer was third fastest going into the final of the Boys 17/18 100 Freestyle but was disqualified in the final. 18 year old Scott Porteous finished 10th in the Boys 17/18 200 IM final on the last day of the ASA Youth Championships at Sheffield in 2.16.42. 

COAST also picked up a relay bronze in the Boys 15-18 4x100 Freestyle (3.35.33) (Ranald Falconer, Kyle O’Neill, Scott Porteous, Robbie Renwick) and the same team gained another bronze in the 15-18 4x200 Freestyle (7.55.01).

 

Scottish National Age & Open Champs Tollcross July 04

The City of Aberdeen Swim Team (COAST) came away with the top team trophies in both the open and age group categories at the 2004 Scottish National Age Group and Open Championships. 

15 year old Robbie Renwick set a new GB Age Group record for 200 Freestyle in addition to improving on his own Scottish Junior 200 and 400 Freestyle records. He has also made the qualification times for the 200 and 400 Freestyle for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Performance Squad swimmer Robbie Renwick (15) produced a  tremendous swim in the Open 400m final on Saturday night picking up silver in a time of 4.00.66 and lowering his previous Scottish Junior record by 0.83s.  Renwick also picked up the Junior 50 Freestyle gold (25.60)

 In the relays COAST 15/16 boys picked up silvers in the  4x50 Medley and the 4x50 Freestyle setting new Scottish Junior records for both. The 13/14 girls won silver in the 4x50 Medley and bronze in the 4x50 Freestyle events.

 

City of Glasgow Long Course Open Meet May 22 / 23, 2004

 A small COAST squad competed at the weekend in Glasgow in the City of Glasgow Long Course Open Meet.

 14 year old Christopher Wilson, was top performer with four 1st places and two 2nd places in the 13/14 Age Group. Chris times were: 100m Breaststroke 1.14.99, 100m  Freestyle 58.65 ,200m  IM 2.25.05
400m  IM 5.08.63


 Performance squad swimmer Michael Adams took the 15/16 1500m Freestyle gold (16.34.45) and also picked up silvers in the 200m Freestyle (2.04.22) and 400m Freestyle (4.17.43). 

In the 12 years old category Stuart Murray came home with a silver in the 200m Butterfly and bronze in the 100m Butterfly and Russell Thom took bronze in the 200m Breaststroke.

 

 

Rotherham Metro Spring Meet 2004

COAST collect Team prize whilst Robbie Renwick takes 2 National Records

Performance Squad swimmer Robbie Renwick (15) capped a tremendous all round individual performance at the Rotherham Metro Open Meet in Sheffield at the weekend with 2 Scottish Junior Records in the 200m and 400m freestyle. Robbie set new marks of 1.54.21 for the 200m and 4.01.29 for the 400m. He also picked up the best male overall award for the competition.

COAST swimmers from all 4 squads featured prominently in the final medal table giving the city team the overall team award. Age Group performance awards went to Nicola Shand (13) (1st) and Greig Morrison (11) (2nd). 13 year old Carrie Simpson became the latest COAST swimmer to achieve a Scottish Youth Squad qualification time when she swam 2.11.60 to win the Girls 13/14 200m freestyle. 

Delighted Head Coach Eileen Adams said that one of the main purposes was to give the younger swimmers a chance to race at a higher level of competition in a 50m pool and almost everyone came back with PB's.

British Olympic Trials (7th-11th April) Ponds Forge, Sheffield

City Swim Star Carry heading to Athens


Commonwealth swimmer David Carry became the first COAST swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Games when he took 4th spot in the men's 200m Freestyle final in the British Olympic Trials at Sheffield in a time of 1.49.71. Carry, Commonwealth Games finalist in 2002 and now based on Australia's Golden Coast, qualified for the Men's 200m Freestyle relay team when he edged out Millfield's Edward Sinclair by 0.47 seconds.

The significance of Carry's achievement will not be lost on his young Performance Squad team mates who also competed at the 5 day event and who aspire to emulate his success. Martin Leel(18), Scott Porteous(18), Ranald Falconer(17), Robbie Renwick (15) and Adrian O'Neill (14) all rose to the toughest challenge of their careers.

Butterfly specialist Martin Leel came 9th in the 100m Butterfly (55.38) and 10th in the 200m Butterfly (2.05.10). 15 year old Renwick made tremendous progress in all his swims and along with Falconer and O'Neill, recorded qualification times for the Scottish Youth Squad next year. Porteous gained PB's in the 100m and 200m Freestyle.

 

Swimming - Scottish National Short Course 

Sat 6th Mar - Sun 7th Mar 2004  Tollcross Leisure Centre, Glasgow

Top city swimmers from the City of Aberdeen Swim Team's (COAST) Performance and Potential squads competed in Glasgow this weekend in the SASA Scottish National Short Course Competition. COAST swimmers came home with 8 individual and 3 Team medals from the Open and Youth competitions.

Martin Leel (19) was top competitor taking gold in the Open 200m Butterfly (2.00.81) and silver in the Open 100m Butterfly (55.34). Seventeen year old Ranald Falconer swam impressively in a number of events and picked up bronze in the Open 100m Backstroke (57.70).

COAST's men's  relay teams grabbed 3 silver medals in the Open competition in the 100m Medley, 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle relays making qualification times for the British championships in July.

In the Youth competition (16 and under), sprinter Tom Lindsay (16) was top medal winner with Gold in the 50m Backstroke (28.35) and bronze in the 50m Freestyle (24.73). At the other end of the distance spectrum in the 1500m there was great strength in depth with medals for Robbie Renwick (16) (silver - 16.00.26) and Michael Adams (15) (bronze - 16.01.98) with 16 year old Kyle O'Neill taking 4th place in 16.11.80.

In the girls events, freestyler Carrie Simpson performed well in the 100m (1:03.50), 200 m (02:11.69) and 400m Fc events. Butterfly specialist Nichola Shand pb'd with 01:11.07 in the 100m Fly.


There were many other notable performances from other members of the young squad who will be aiming to climb the medal rostrum in the years to come.

 

Leeds Multi Nations Meet (13 - 15 Feb 04)

Swimmers from the elite Performance Squad from the City of Aberdeen Swim Team (COAST) experienced one of their toughest competitions so far this season when they competed in the open age City of Leeds Multi-Nations Grand Prix this weekend. Also taking part were some world class swimmers from Britain including former world record 200m Butterfly swimmer James Hickman, and Commonwealth swimmers Ian Edmond and Gregor Tait. COAST swimmers are in the middle of heavy training and Head Coach Eileen Adams wanted to give her swimmers some early long course (50m) competition. Financial assistance came from major sponsors Schlumberger Oilfield Services.

British Youth internationalist Martin Leel (19) was top performer taking a silver in the 50m Butterfly (26.37) behind Hickman, and a bronze in the 100m Butterfly (58.47). Martin also made the 200m Butterfly final coming 5th (2.10.46).

Scottish Age Group champion 15 year old Robbie Renwick made two top eight finishes coming 6th in the 1500m Freestyle and 6th in the 400m Freestyle (4.16.94).

Tom Lindsay (15) made the 50m Butterfly final coming home 7th (27.83) and 14 year old Michael Adams (14) was the youngest COAST finalist coming 8th in the 200m Butterfly (2.18.80)

North District Age Groups  Inverness 7 - 8 Feb 2004

A strong team performance in the North District Age Group event in Inverness this weekend brought out some excellent individual performances from the COAST youngsters.

Rapidly improving 12 year old Rachel Milne captured 5 titles in the 12 and under age group: 100mFree - 1.05.33, 400mFree - 4.53.67, 100mButterfly - 1.15.19, 200mBackstroke - 2.34.49, 200IM - 2.36.27.

14 year old Michael Adams took 4 titles: 400m Free - 4.11.79, 1500mFree16.28.95, 200mButterfly - 2.13.89, 200mBackstroke - 2.19.98

13 year old Carrie Simpson was unfortunate to come up against Westhill's Hanah Miley in her age group and had to settle for 4 silver medals.


12 year old Keith Beveridge  grabbed the 100mFree and the 100m Butterfly in times of 1.05.87 and 1.14.11 respectively.

COAST Youngsters are Splash Hits!

COAST youngsters took a leaf out of their older colleagues book when they went about rewriting many of the competition records in the annual SAS Junior Swim meet.

Record breaking performances came from 12 year old Rachel Milne who claimed 5 new records,  Kyle O'Neill (15) who took 4 titles including 3 records, 14 year old Cults lad Michael Adams with 3 of the 200m records,  Tom Lindsay (15) who set new records in 3 of the 4 sprint events and Bridge of Don's Lewis Mathers who set a new Breaststroke sprint time.

Carrie Simpson won an impressive 5 titles in the 13 year old age group.

COAST picked up the best overall team award.
