NEWS / RESULTS / ACTIVITIES
2008
Whilst the rest of Britain catches its breath after the amazing performance of Team GB at the Beijing Olympics, here is a summary of how COAST's 2 Olympians fared.
Having left UK in early July, the GB Swim Team acclimatised in Osaka in Japan, making final preparations to their training and adjusting to the time difference and climatic conditions - mid 30's and high humidity. 2 weeks later, the team headed to Beijing on the 5th and some who were not competing in the first days joined the opening ceremony where Mark Foster led the team out. By this time David Carry and Robbie Renwick would have been in bed as both were competing within 48hr.
In the men's 400m Freestyle, David Carry was in probably one of the most difficult races to reach a final - despite putting in an excellent time of 3:47.17 which was a new British record, he lost out by 3 seconds on gaining a place in the final which was won by Korea's Taehwan Park who came close to meeting the all time record set by Ian Thorpe. This was the first signs that world swimming had moved significantly on since Athens.
Day 2 was Robbie Renwick's turn in the 200m free. In some very strange heat swimming, where Robbie came a creditable 3rd in his heat with a time of 1:47.82, he found himself lying 17th having missed the semi-final slot by 0.01 sec. Only after consoling himself back in the athlete's village, he got the call that some-one had dropped out of the semis and he was reprieved. The next day in the morning session, he swam a blinder of 01:47.07 and despite coming 7th in his semi beat all but one of the swimmers in the other semi to reach the final.
So on day 3 Robbie woke up (after very little sleep) to an Olympic final. Perhaps nerves played a part with Robbie coming in 8th having a keen battle with the Japanese competitor in the next lane ... but the race limelight was stolen by Michael Phelps who led the field from the start and smashed the world record. We can still reflect that there was no Australian in the final and only 2 other Europeans so Robbie is cementing his reputation as a top flight swimmer.
Day 3 also saw the heats of the men's 4 x 200m freestyle relay and team selectors took no risks entering their top 4 swimmers of David Carry, Andrew Hunter, Ross Davenport and Robbie Renwick and they came in second behind the USA in a new British record. David Carry also broke Simon Burnet's record in the first leg so hope's were high. The next morning, they had ambitions of a medal and a good lane (not next to the American's). The race started with a frenzy and as predicted with Michael Phelps lead-off, the USA took a commanding lead. The race for the other positions ebbed and flowed, and despite going another 2 seconds under the previous British record and fighting hard, our team came 6th but actually only losing out by less than a second to Australia who took bronze.
So Robbie can celebrate 5 Olympic swims and a final and David came home with 3 GB records.
What-ever the results, both our Olympians can reflect that they gave their best and that they competed in a world record races and on the world stage. Follow this link for David's You-Tube interview by Speedo.

ASA Championships Liverpool 10 - 13 July 2008
The ASA open championships moved to the new 50m pool in Liverpool for the first time and followed the Beijing Olympic format of heats in the evening and finals in the morning. COAST's Robbie Renwick came up against manly of his fellow Olympic qualifiers including David Carry, Andy Hunter and Dean Milwain and Ross Davenport in the 200m and 400m. Robbie made amends for the Olympic trials and led the way home holding off 1500m specilaist David Davies in a close race which prompted a rare headline on the British Swimming website (see below). Robbie also had a thrilling 200m swim where he just lost out to Ross Davenport in a close final.
This was the last competition in UK before departure to Asia on 25 July.

COAST sent a strong team to the home nationals which were boosted by many visiting teams including many of the French Olympic team including Laure Manaudou and Alain Bernard, the recent world record holder at 50m Freestyle. As in previous years the 13 & 14 years Girls / Boys swam HDW events in the afternoon.
In the Open Championships, the glory went to Robbie Renwick who produced some stunning swims taking the 200m , 400m, and 800m freestyle titles. In the 200m he was up against he Frenchman Bernard who posted a faster time in the heats and in a thrilling race over 4 lengths, Robbie pulled away in the last length from the sprinter to win in a PB time of 01:47.70 (just outside David Carry's GB record of 1:47.40) which also earned him the Best Swimmer of the meet trophy for the highest LEN points.
Robbie also went under 8 minutes for the 800m freestyle in 07:58.74 - a 9 second PB and winning by 10 seconds. To cap it all the COAST mens 4 x 100m FS relay took gold where Ranald Falconer, Steven Sutherland and Keith Beveridge joined Robbie to pip Newcastle by a fingernail.
In other events Ranald Falconer took silver in the 50m Back, came 6th in the 100m Back and was 7th in the 50m Free, Eleanor Brooke was 4th in the 200m Breast, Elizabeth Hughes and Nicola Shand came 7th and 8th respectively in the 400m Free, Russell Thom finaled in the 200m Breast coming 9th and Carly Fraser came 7th in the 100m Breast.
Overall in the team scores COAST came 4th behind winners Warrender for the 3rd year.
In the Junior events
Euan Inglis came 3rd in the 100m Breast, 4th in the 200m Breast, 7th in the 200m Fly and 6th in the 200m IM, Hayley Monteith came 6th in the 100m Breats, 8th in the 200m Breast and 10th in 100m Back. The boys 15-16 fought hard for a 2nd place in the 4 x 50m IM relay.

9th FINA World Championships (25m) Manchester
Following the tension of the Olympic trials, David Carry and Robbie Renwick travelled directly to the Wold Champs in Manchester, which were held in a customized 25m x 25m pool in the M.E.N. Arena.
Both were competing in the 2 x 200m and 400 FS. David was also selected for the 200m FS individual swim which was on Day 1 and having got through the heats to the finals, David had a nightmare slip on the blocks and finished 6th. However matters were put right the next day when the GB 4 x 200m relay broke GB records and in the final broke the European record to push Australia all the way to take Silver. Robbie was lead off swimmer on both swims and broke (David's) Scottish 200m records in the heat with his split of 01: 45.83 and followed that in the evening with a faster swim of 01:44.83 which helped the team take Silver.
David in action in the relay
Day 3 saw both men in action in the 400m FS. Robbie demonstrated that he had a point to prove following Sheffield by breaking the British record with a swim of 03:42.66 to go into the finals 3rd fastest with David lying 6th. The evening final saw David take an early lead but the Russian Yuriy Prilokov in the outside lane broke clear and with the rest fighting for second and 3rd, Robbie timed a late charge to take Bronze in a huge PB and British record of 03:40.22, narrowly pipping David by 0.35 sec.
Robbie and David both paid tribute to Eileen Adams in their media interviews.

British Championship / Olympic Trials (31 March - 6 April 08)

COAST can celebrate 2 of its swimmers being qualified for the Beijing Olympics following a tense week of qualifiers for both swimmers and their coaches. The situation was made more tense by the fact that both David Carry and Robbie Renwick were competing head to head in the 200m and 400m individual freestyle events. Ultimately it was honours even with David qualifying for the 400m and Robbie for the 200m and both being in the top 4 for the 4 x 200m relay.
Both were in action on the first day / first event and both swam below par. Despite having achieved the time previously Robbie failed to meet the Olympic qualifying time in the evening heat. David as the current British Record holder also seemed to struggle and only made the qualifying time by 0.06 sec. However David made amends in the next morning's final, winning ahead of fellow Loughboro student Dean Milwain who both booked their places on the Olympic team. Robbie put his disappointment behind him and competed strongly coming in 3rd but there was no hiding his despondency.
2 days later it was the 200m heats and this time things went to form with David and Robbie both getting the necessary pre-qualifying times - although again only by a few tenths, setting themselves up with Ross Davenport and Andy Hunter who also made the qualifying times.
In a tense final next morning with all 8 entrants in with a chance at the relay slot, Robbie led from the start only to be overtaken by Davenport on the final 50, but clung onto 2nd slot to secure his nomination for the individual event and also the relay positions along with David, who came 3rd.
Afterwards it was clear the Robbie had overcome his earlier disappointment and swum the race of his life to achieve his ambition of going to the Olympics. At the age of 19 his is one of the youngest men to have been selected and make up a contingent of 10 Scots in the likely Team.
Robbie wishes to thank all who helped him and wished him luck but especially coach Eileen Adams and Ranald who kept his spirits up during the week.
