The City of Aberdeen has an integrated swimming development program linking Learn to Swim programs at various clubs, schools and City Council run schemes with locals swimming clubs. The City provides funding for the Development of Swimming and assists with coach support, coach education and manages the majority of facilities.
Swimmers can progress through various stages to National level and beyond. Masters and Open water swimming swimmers are also linked to the club system.

Aqua Aberdeen and Club Learn to Swim Schemes
Aqua Aberdeen is council run scheme which follows National teaching guidelines for teaching swimming. Click here to for general information and how to contact Aqua Aberdeen.
The program has a pre school adult + child sessions and a program of 5 levels for learning swimming.

Various Clubs in Aberdeen also provide Learn to Swim programmes and in some areas these are taking over from the council Aqua scheme.
Junior Coaching (JC1, JC2, JC3)
Entry level: Completion of Aqua Aberdeen Level 5
Age range: 7- 10 years - average age: 9 years
Training Overview
3 sessions / 3 hours per week; Focusing on stroke technique and racing rules. 1000 1500 metres per hour.

Promotion to JC2
80% attendance and 3 times from:
25m butterfly 24.00, 25m backstroke 25.00, 25m breaststroke 28.00

Age range: 9 12 years; Average age: 11 years
Training overview
4 sessions / 5 hours per week; perfecting technique, developing endurance,1200 1800 metres per hour.

Promotion to JC4 / C.O.A.S.T squads
Promotion to C.O.A.S.T squads is based on times achieved in competitions, attendance, coaches references, and availability of places.
These squads are links squads between clubs and COAST. They give the COAST coaches an opportunity to observe younger swimmers and give the swimmers a new experience of training with a different squad members / coach. JC4 swimmers will be expected to compete in long course events.
Training overview
The sessions are 1 hour per week.
Competitions
As per JC3 but with the possibility of being included in National Leagues and other invitational events.
Promotion to COAST squads
Promotion to COAST squads is based on times achieved in competitions, attendance, coaches references, and availability of places. From 2002 the emphasis will be on 50m and 200m times. Swimmers must achieve 3 of each 50m and 200m target set by the COAST coach. In addition , general attitude and ability to perform test sets will be considered.
Junior Potential, Youth Potential, Potential & Performance
COAST runs 4 full time squads - each with dedicated a coach. The 4 squads evolve vertically and are structured around swimmers performance and maturity to cope with increased training loads.
Each squad has approx 20 - 24 swimmers. From 2001, in line with National recommendations, considerations times from long course events will be based on age as of 31st August and 31st December for short course.
The target group here are girls between 11 - 13 and boys between 11 - 14 years old.
Training overview
The squad has 7 sessions / 8 hours per week with 1 land training session. The focus is on perfecting skills and advanced techniques. The target distances are 2500 metres / hour.
Competitions
This squad will be expected to targets all North District and National level competitions in addition to high level local events.
The target group here are girls and boys from 12 to 14.
Training overview
The squad has 7 sessions / 10.5 hours per week plus 2 gym sessions. The focus is on perfecting skills and advanced techniques. The target distances are 3000 metres / hour.
Competitions
This squad will be expected to targets all North District and National level competitions in addition to high level local events.
The target group here are girls and boys from 13 to 16 years old.
Training overview
The squad has 8 sessions / 12.5 hours per week plus 2 gym sessions. The focus is on achieving qualifications for national and international events. The target distances are 26,000 metres / week rising to 40,0000 metres / week.
Competitions
This squad will be expected to targets all North District, National level and GB competitions in addition to high level local events.
The target group here are girls from 14 and boys from 15 years old.
Training overview
The squad has 9 sessions / 17.5 hours per week plus 3 gym sessions. The focus is on achieving qualifications for national and international events. The target distances are 52,000 metres / week.
Competitions
This squad will be expected to targets all North District, National level and GB competitions in addition to high level local events.
